In the films, Gamling’s role is expanded. In the books, Gamling is the permanent garrison captain of Helm’s Deep, answering to Theodred before his death. After Theodred’s death, he answers to Erkenbrand. In the first film, Gamling appears as a second-in-command to Hama the door warden. He is also the replacement for Deorwine. In the second film, he appears as the main Rohan captain during the Battle of Pelennor Fields, where he kills Mumakil.
